What are Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings that flow into the tiny pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Once hardened, they act like a protective barrier, blocking food particles and cavity causing bacteria from getting stuck where toothbrush bristles can’t always reach.

Why Sealants Matter

Most kid’s cavities start in the deep grooves of molars. Those grooves are narrow and hard to clean, even for super-brushers. A sealant fills those grooves and smooths the tooth’s surface, so plaque has a much harder time taking hold.

When Should My Child Get Sealants?

The best time to get sealants is soon after molars erupt, before decay has a chance to start.

  • First permanent molars typically come in around ages 5½–7.
  • Second permanent molars usually arrive around ages 11–13.
  • Baby (primary) molars: In some cases, we may recommend sealants if your child is at higher risk for cavities or has especially deep grooves.

Every child’s timing is a little different which is why regular check-ups are essential. By visiting the dentist every 6 months, we’ll be able to determine as soon as teeth are ready and provide prompt protection against decay.

What Happens During the Visit?

Getting sealants is quick and comfortable. No shots, no drilling.

  1. Clean & Dry – We gently clean the tooth and keep it dry.
  2. Prep the Surface – A special gel briefly roughens the enamel, so the sealant bonds well.
  3. Paint It On – The liquid sealant flows into the grooves.
  4. Cure – We shine a blue light to harden the sealant.
  5. Check the Bite – We make sure everything feels smooth.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can protect teeth for several years, but they can chip and wear. We’ll check them at every routine visit. If a sealant chips or wears, we can easily add more material.

Helpful tip: Keeping regular six month dental checkups helps us catch touch‑ups early so protection stays strong.

Will Insurance Cover Dental Sealants?

Many dental benefit plans cover sealants for children’s molars because they help prevent costlier fillings later. Coverage rules vary though, so if you’re unsure, just ask we’re happy to help you check your benefits.

Sealants vs. Fluoride: Do We Need Both?

Yes! Sealants and Fluoride work differently and together to protect your teeth. Fluoride strengthens the entire tooth surface. Sealants physically block the most cavity-prone grooves. Together, they give kids’ smiles super strength to fight against decay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do sealants hurt? Nope. Kids usually say the hardest part is letting the tooth dry for a whole minute.

Do they change how teeth feel? They may feel a little different with the tongue at first, and the bite may feel a little strange, but most children adjust within a day or two.

What if my child already has a tiny “stain” starting? In many cases, placing a sealant over an early non-cavitated spot can help stop it from turning into a full cavity. At Pediatric Dentistry of Wyoming and Nebraska, we’ll evaluate each tooth to determine the best course of action.
